When does a home gym make sense?

A home gym makes sense if the way to exercise or to the gym takes longer or is difficult. For example, if you need 30 minutes to get to the nearest gym, it makes sense to think about a home gym. This saves you the journey and you can start training immediately. This is perfect for people who don’t have much time, as they can start right away.

A home gym is also useful for people who are tied to their house or apartment. For example, if you have to be at home and can’t go to the nearest gym, it’s perfect to be able to do the training at home.

What should not be missing in the home gym?

When you set up your home gym, three things should not be missing.

  1. A bar from which you can hang (preferably free), you can also use the bar to attach thera bands or other equipment.
  2. weight or resistance. This can be in the form of a dumbbell, kettlebell, punching bag, or barbell. If you’re creative, you can also find alternatives like water bottles or crates.┬á
  3. Thera bands. They are super useful for stretching or strength training. With them you can make simple exercises difficult or difficult exercises easier.

What floor do I need in the home gym?

In the home gym you are tied to the floor you have at home. However, this is not necessarily designed for sports. That’s why you have to pay attention to a few things so that you don’t damage your own body and the floor of your apartment.┬á

For training you should make sure that the floor is non-slip. In order not to injure yourself during exercises, you should wear shoes, use non-slip floors or mats.

If you do a lot of exercises on the floor, you can also put exercise mats underneath for more comfort.

If you use equipment in the home gym, you obviously don’t want to damage the floor with it. A stable rubber floor makes sense here, on which you can store the equipment and also do sports on it.┬á

Depending on the purpose, you should also adapt the sports floor to your circumstances. If you only need the floor as a shelf, a thin rubber sports floor with a thickness of 15-20mm is sufficient.

For other exercises where you put weight down like barbell or dumbbell deadlifts, we recommend flat 20-30mm of floor depending on weight. It’s also important that you don’t drop the weight, but put it down in a controlled manner.┬á

We only recommend dropping weights on a concrete floor with a 20-30mm sports floor.

Depending on the exercise, you often don’t need a lot of space. For push-ups, sit-ups and squats, you only need one height of floor space. You can also use kettlebell and dumbbell exercises with this space.┬á

For pull-ups you need about 1m to 1.4m of space on the wall or ceiling for a pull-up bar.

For barbell training you need about 2.5m space in width and, depending on the exercise, 1-2m space in depth.
